Objectives
To enable engineering geologists to learn the basic principles of soil mechanics and foundation engineering as practised by civil engineers.Skills outcomes:
- critical evaluation of data;
- in depth knowledge of the basic properties of soil and their behaviour.
Syllabus
- Classification and properties of soils;
- Effective stress, pore pressure parameters, applications: soil testing: triaxial, shear box, ring shear, strength parameters.
- Earth pressures, active and passive.
- Soil stress; seepage and flow;
- Earth dams and embankments.
- Stability analysis;
- Flow slides, liquefaction.
- Bearing capacity;
- Types of foundation;
- Settlement of foundations.
- Earth retaining structures;
- Sheet piling, reinforced earth.
