An A level (or equivalent) in a foreign language. Exceptionally, students studying at levels 2 and 3 may be allowed to study SPPO1080 without studying its co-requisite SPPO1081. Module summary
The purpose of this module is to equip students with a useful gounding in Portuguese grammar and an ability to produce, read, understand and translate spoken and written Portuguese in a variety of everyday contexts. The module is taught via four weekly language classes including two grammar-based classes, using a booklet especially devised by our language tutors, and two oral classes with a native speaker of Portuguese. All students with a good A-Level pass or equivalent in a foreign language are eligible to apply for this popular module, and students with interests in continental and Brazilian Portuguese are equally welcome.This is a 20 credit module run in Semester 1 and should be taken together with SPPO1081. - Students with prior knowledge of Portuguese should consider SPPO1083: Intermediate Portuguese. - Those who do well in both SPPO1080 and SPPO1081 can, depending on their programme, apply to change to Joint Honours Portuguese in Level 2. This module aims to equip students with a basic grounding in Portuguese grammar and an ability to produce, read, understand and translate spoken and written Portuguese in a variety of everyday contexts. Basic grammatical structures will be covered, and vocabulary will be built up in key areas of everyday communication.Upon completion of this module students will be able to express themselves fluently and accurately in both Portuguese and English.
Skills outcomes
1. The ability to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the basic structures of Portuguese
2. The accurate use of Portuguese in simple written and spoken contexts
3. The ability to organise and present ideas within the framework of a structured and reasonable argument
4. The ability to assimilate and implement appropriate style conventions in written work, including bibliography and footnotes/endnotes.
Syllabus
This module will introduce basic grammar fields, such as the present and simple past-verb tenses of regular and irregular verb. It is intended that this grounding in the rudiments of the Portuguese Language will be expanded in the second half of this linked module, Portuguese Language for Beginners 1b, which will introduce all the verb tenses and more advanced grammatical constructions.
Throughout this linked module the students' vocabulary range will be developed in a variety of lexical fields.
