Module summary
This module aims to offer students an introduction to creative writing in the form of prose fiction, drama and, where appropriate, poetry from Portugal, Brazil and Portuguese-speaking Africa. The texts date from the late nineteenth century to the present day. The module will develop students' critical and analytical skills, as well as requiring them to give oral presentations and to write critical essays on the works covered.Objectives

The module will develop students' critical and analytical skills, as well as requiring them to give oral presentations and to write critical essays on the works covered.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to discuss coherently and knowledgeably some of the major literary texts written in Portuguese on three continents. The module will seek to focus on recurrent themes but it will also provide an insight into literary reflections of the society and history of Portugal, Brazil and Portuguese-speaking Africa. This module should also develop students' analytical and writing skills.

Skills developed:
- Close-reading and interpretation of literary texts from a variety of historical periods and geographic areas (which involve critical thinking, the ability to detect patterns and draw conclusions, being able to see issues from a variety of viewpoints, cultural awareness)
- Essay writing skills (which involve analysing complex information, logical thinking, constructing reasoned arguments, developing insights)
- Presentational skills in both written and spoken form.
- Planning, time management, organisational skills.
Syllabus
This module will consider a number of major literary texts from Portugal, Brazil and Portuguese-speaking Africa dating from the 1840s to the present day in poetry, prose and drama. The texts chosen have been selected not only because of their intrinsic significance but also in order to reflect the cultural diversity of the countries concerned.
