Pre-requisite qualifications

Background in Sport Psychology, (e.g. SPSC 1216 and 2214) or passed at least Level 1 of a Psychology undergraduate degree.

Objectives

Learning outcomes
By the end of this module students should be able to:
- evaluate critically, research in the field of exercise and psychological health;
- critically analyse theoretical models underpinning exercise and health psychology;
- critically understand the use of exercise as an intervention to promote psychological health;
- have a critical awareness of the maladaptive consequences exercise can have upon psychological health;
- demonstrate a critical understanding of exercise prescription from a psychological perspective;
- present and report a qualitative analysis of sedentary behaviour and provide recommendations to enhance exercise adherence.


Syllabus

In this module, students will explore a variety of topics related to exercise and psychological health.

These will include:
- exercise and quality of life;
- exercise and self-perceptions;
- mood and exercise;
- models of exercise behaviour;
- strategies and interventions to enhance exercise adherence;
- dose-response debate;
- exercise dependence;
- body image and eating disorders in sport and exercise.

Many of these will be analysed in relation to the 'normal' population and a clinical population (eg clinically depressed or anxious individuals).

- 3 hours reading per lecture: 30 hours
