Objectives
To understand:- the role of transport and mobility in a modern society.
- travel trends and key issues for transport in different local, national and global contexts.
- how these issues relate to key topical debates in transport.
- the way in which policy is developed to respond to these issues and the role of organisations and stakeholders, and establish suitable frameworks for analysis
Learning outcomes
Awareness of and initial engagement with the transport literatures (including academic and policy literatures, practice case studies and news media). This is in direct readiness for more focused level two activities.
Students will learn about the full range of dilemmas facing the transport sector. By the end of the module they will be able to appreciate the complex nature of transport and mobility and apply their own ideas and experiences to generate potential solutions.

1. Introduction to key challenges in transport
2. Understanding travel behaviours and mobility cultures
3. The role of transport in shaping the city (Leeds fieldtrip)
4. Energy, environment and climate change
5. Accessibility and proximity of place
6. Uneven and unequal mobilities
7. Planning for healthy cities
8. Visioning sustainable transport (student presentations)
Semester 2
9. Promoting behaviour change and innovative solutions
10. New transport networks: and smart technologies
11. Healthy cities/healthy lifestyles
12. Pricing travel and innovative finance
13. Global supply chains and green logistics
14. Transport governance and policy-making (practical case studies)
15. Transport in the media (class debate)
