Module summary

The module provides an introduction to estimation and statistical hypothesis testing in the health sciences. It will enable students to understand basic statistical concepts that are key to undertaking and appraising research such as confidence intervals and p-values. Students will learn about study design and how to undertake a preliminary statistical analysis as well as developing an understanding of the more advance method of regression The module will equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to undertake an analysis of a dataset, and critically appraise statistics in the research literature.

Objectives

The purpose of the module is to:
- Introduce students to the fundamental statistical concepts and methods used in the health sciences
- Enable students to be able to apply these to critically appraise the literature

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module students will be able to:
- Classify, summarise and display data
- Demonstrate an understanding of and be able to explain the difference between statistical and clinical significance
- Synthesise knowledge across a range of key statistical domains so as to be able to know when they are appropriate and useful to apply
- Devise a strategy for analysing a statistical dataset, undertake the analysis and present the results coherently, including correctly interpret the p-value
- Critically appraise the statistical findings in published research

- Study design and evidence
- Sampling and estimation from a sample, including an understanding of precision and confidence intervals
- Basic probability distributions
- Statistical hypothesis testing
- Risk and summary measures for binary data
- Analysing continuous outcomes
- Analysing categorical outcomes
- Correlation and linear regression
- Displaying results in tables and figures
- Critical appraisal of statistical evidence
