Module summary
This module develops the student’s knowledge and understanding of radiation physics and contextualises it in the clinical application of mammography. Module content and delivery underpin the application of theoretical scientific and technological knowledge to practical skill development in clinical mammographyObjectives
On completion of this module students will be able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge and an understanding of the principles of mammographic radiation physics and digital imaging technology applicable to clinical mammography practice.Learning outcomes
- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the scientific and technological principles of mammography and explain their relevance to image acquisition and equipment choice and use
- Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of digital mammography image acquisition, processing, recording, display, storage and transfer
- Critically evaluate radiation, clinical and ergonomic safety issues related to mammography to enable optimal use of the equipment within the current, internationally recognised recommendations for safe practice, actively reducing hazards to patients and staff
- Critically appraise current mammographic equipment, including future technological development to include replacement equipment provision.
- Critically evaluate technical mammography quality assurance procedures in routine use.
- Critically evaluate the risks and benefits of using ionising radiation in screening and symptomatic mammography practice.
