PEME5465M Fuel ProcessingThis module is not approved as an Elective
Objectives
This module will deliver an understanding of the technologies and chemical processes used in fuel processing in the oil, gas and coal industry and enable the students to solve technology-specific problems and critically address technology-comparative questions.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should:
- Have a broad knowledge of petroleum refining, natural gas processing and coal conversion technologies;
- Have an understanding of the process chemistry involved in each of these technologies;
- Have an understanding of the environmental issues associated with these technologies;
- Have the ability to perform technology-specific calculations for fuel processing such as mass and energy balances;
- Have developed generic team working, communication, and presentation skills;
- Have developed data collection, analysis, and synthesis skills;
- Have the ability to apply theory to the interpretation and critical analysis of data from experiments and other sources.
Syllabus
Introduction to refinery distillation processes, petroleum refining, natural gas processing and coal conversion technology.
Refinery distillation processes - Desalting of crude, process description of typical simple distillation, fractional distillation, crude oil distillation, vacuum distillation.
Petroleum refining - Cracking, reforming, alkylation, hydrogenation, isomerisation, sweetening, coking, shale oil and tar sand upgrading.
Natural gas processing - Oil and condensate removal, water removal, fractionation and CO2 removal, sweetening, shale gas upgrading, methane reforming, gas to liquids (Fischer Tropsch).
