CIVE1500 | Geotechnics I |
This module is not approved as a discovery module
Objectives
(i) to further describe the factors that influence soil strength and to apply this understanding to ultimate load problems (such as bearing capacity and slope stability);(ii) to discuss the concept of soil stiffness, and its application to deformation problems (such as settlement of a structure);
(iii) to develop the equations of flow through porous media, and to apply them to both flow and consolidation problems;
(iv) to develop an intuitive understanding of how soil will respond to load through the conceptual framework of Critical State Soil Mechanics.
Syllabus
Strengths of soil, ultimate capacity of shallow foundations, behaviour of piles, soil stiffness, settlement of foundations, geostructural mechanisms, seepage, consolidation theory, slope stability, and the critical state soil model.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
There are two assessed problem sheets to formally monitor progress. These must be submitted in weeks 4 and 9 (exact dates coordinated with other relevant modules). Each problem sheet contains two problems which together should take two to free hours to solve given a student’s state of knowledge at those points in the module.Self assessed problems are set on each of 5 handouts, with solutions published on a later handout so that students can assess their own progress more closely.
Methods of assessment
Coursework
Assessment type | Notes | % of formal assessment |
