Objectives

- To move from the elementary design of structural steel members to the concept of steel design of structures/buildings and study their failure modes due to lateral loads and vertical progressive collapse;
- To focus on the most complicated structural design details of steel structures such as moment connections and base-plates;
- To introduce and provide technical knowledge on the pre-stressed concrete design and its applications in structural engineering;
- To provide more complete means for design and analysis of steel and concrete structures and to familiarise students with a range of typical processing techniques.

Learning outcomes
- be able to apply their prior knowledge and understanding of the scientific and mathematical principles of engineering to design steel and concrete structures;
- have an appreciation of the fundamental design philosophies adopted in the area of design of steel & concrete structures and buildings;
- be able to apply mathematical and computer-based models for solving problems in engineering and be able to assess the limitations of each particular case;
- be aware of the latest research and developing technologies related to the design of steel & concrete structures.


Syllabus

Steel:
- Introduction/revision Eurocodes and Eurocode 3, Multi-storey Buildings;
- Progressive Collapse and Avoiding Disproportionate Collapse;
- Sway Stability (Braced and Un-braced Multi-storey Frames Design);
- Design of Multi-storey Rigid Frames (Moment Connections);
- Design of Multi-storey Frames (Column Base Connections with Axial loaded only);
- Design of Multi-storey Rigid Frames (Rigid Column Base Connections, including Moments);
- Construction issues, Fabrication, Steel Details, H&S, CDM.

Concrete:
- Principles and development of pre-stressing;
- Pre- and post-tensioning;
- Review of partial and full pre-stressing;
- Bonded and un-bonded post-tensioned construction;
- Losses of pre-stress;
- Stress limitations at transfer and under design service conditions;
- Shear strength of pre-stressed concrete cracked and un-cracked in flexure;
- Ultimate moment capacity of pre-stressed sections;
- Design of statically determinate composite and non-composite forms of construction.
