Objectives
To give students an understanding of the theory and practice of mechanical building services engineering, water and sanitation distribution, and energy performance in multi-storey buildings.Learning outcomes
- An understanding of thermal comfort in buildings.
- An appreciation of basic ventilation, heating and cooling systems in buildings.
- Understanding the basis of CHP & BEM systems.
- An understanding of cold water distribution systems in multi-storey buildings and sanitation/draining systems.
Syllabus
Mechanical Services: Thermal comfort, basic heating systems, natural & mechanical ventilation, air handling plant, air conditioning, refrigeration, heat distribution methods. (combined heat & power (CHP), building energy management (BEM)).
Water supply, drainage & sanitation: distribution of cold water supplies in tall buildings, combined & separate drainage systems, load estimation & drain sizing, sanitary systems, pipe sizing using unit discharge method, problems of syphonage.
