Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- describe a range of hardware devices and explain the advantages and disadvantages of these devices in various contexts;
- understand the components of an IT infrastructure including desktop machines, portables and connectivity;
- understand the role of the operating system, networking and Web technologies;
- understand the potential for grid, cloud and utility computing in modern IT infrastructures;
- demonstrate awareness of the role and nature of computer programs;
- understand simple programs.
Syllabus
Infrastructure components and the inter-relationships of components: hardware; data representation; service oriented architecture; Internet; networks; thin v thick clients; software as a service (SOAS); mainframes; servers; operating systems; distributed systems; cloud computing; enterprise architecture; carbon footprint.
