Module summary
We will cover four key theme areas in this module:- Research, preparation and delivery of group and individual presentations and materials that you can then share to promote of study abroad and the placement year within the University- Understanding different scholarly and professional cultures and articulating the impact they have for you on personal development and aspirations- Exploring academic and personal concepts of identity and being able to relate these to your own personal and professional contexts- Identifying, planning and articulating your individual career and personal goalsThis syllabus is supported by three practical, assessed pieces of work directly related to the themes above. The module will also integrate input by external speakers.Objectives
By the end of this module returned placement / study abroad students will have been given the opportunity, through structured workshops and individual reflective learning, to:- develop and apply a range of core skills (including group work, research, critical thinking, networking and independent review) in order to articulate their experience in the context of their personal and professional development
- Explore and relate concepts of culture and identity to their experience
- Share their experience and learning with students and staff at the University of Leeds, and contribute to a legacy that will inform future study abroad / placement year recruitment.
Learning outcomes
This module will enable students to:
- Unpick and articulate their placement / study abroad experience, reflecting on the development of skills and behaviours in academic and work environments
- Communicate the differences and connections between their University context and their study abroad / placement context, and comment on the way they are reacclimatising to final year study
- Engage in debate about the relative experiences of a placement and a study abroad year, and speculate on the way these experiences may shape future development differently
- Apply an understanding of the values, ethos and culture at their placement / study abroad organisation to their academic studies and to their career planning strategy
- Reflect on, and understand, their multi-faceted identity as a student, an ambassador for the University, a mentor and a potential employee
- Identify the point at which they stand on the decide-plan -compete journey, reflect on the impact of the study abroad / placement experience and be able to map their progression from that point.
Skills outcomes
Subject specific skills: This module will give students the opportunity to:
- Reflect in a sophisticated way on personal development and make that reflection accessible to others
- Research questions of culture, identity and behaviour in relation to their placement / study abroad contexts
- Epitomise and communicate their experiences in writing speech and multi-media presentations
- Create and present engaging, accessible online material
- Critique diverse contexts of study, work and living, and to apply that critique to your personal choices and plans
- Demonstrate ethical and intercultural awareness
- Engage with, and critique, questions of employability, both personally and in relation to broader debates.

Weeks 4 & 5: Culture – academic and personal perspectives
Week 6: Independent study
Weeks 7 & 8: Impact of placement / study abroad year on academic performance.
Weeks 9 &10: The multi-faceted student identity - individual reflection, academic input and group debate
Week 11: Where next? Identifying, planning and articulating individual routes

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
This will take the form of face to face tutoring in the seminars and supervision of any online discussions. Monitoring will also be informed by tutor support for preparation of the assignments and assessment of these.Methods of assessment

Students will be expected to undertake self directed group work in preparation for their group presentation assignment. In addition they will independently research, review and apply understanding of concepts of identity and culture in a personal and professional development context. In-depth individual study, supported by group debate and tutorial input, will feed into the, reflective assignment they will submit at the end of the module
