Pre-requisite qualifications

- A minimum of two years relevant postgraduate professional experience.
- Have basic ICT skills (to be able to use email, word processors and the WWW) and to be able to use computers routinely in their academic work.
- To demonstrate independent facility in the use of ICT with appropriate technical support.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- analyse a comprehensive range of approaches to e-Learning in detail;
- evaluate critically the practices associated with e-Learning;
- relate e-Learning systematically to a range of broader issues in both pedagogy and formal education.

Syllabus

The nature and practices associated with e-Learning will be examined critically in this module. This includes issues associated with on-line and distance learning, together with an exploration of their implications for teaching and learning. The range of issues covered in the module include:

- nature and types of e-Learning;
- on-line and distance learning;
- the role of computer-medicated communication;
- the impact of e-Learning on formal education;
- equity issues and the digital divide;
- evaluating the emergence of m-learning and person to person communication and their significance for teaching and learning.

The seminars are 12x2 hour synchronous seminars and
the on-line learning takes the form of 12x2 hour asynchronous discussions

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Each participant will be expected to make a contribution of between 500 - 1000 words per session about a specific issue in the asynchronous discussion. Each person will be expected to contribute to the weekly synchronous seminar.
