Module summary

This module will help you evaluate, select and adept TESOL textbooks to suit your learners and context and help you design your own materials for teaching new language, and reading, listening, speaking and writing skills. We will discuss a range of issues to do with materials design, such as the role of authentic materials. This is a practically-oriented module with an emphasis on creativity.

Objectives

On completion of this module students should:

- understand the centrality of task design to TESOL pedagogy
- be aware of the linguistic, educational and socio-cultural values implicit in TESOL tasks and materials
- understand the design principles underlying contemporary TESOL textbooks
- understand issues in textbook evaluation and selection
- understand the possible structures of TESOL tasks
- understand principles and procedures for creating tasks and materials for TESOL
- be able to design tasks and materials for TESOL

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should have:

Syllabus

Indicative content:

Session 1: A Framework for Materials Development for TESOL
This first session sets out the area for study by defining and inter-relating key concepts in language teaching materials design, and establishes task design as the central concern.

Sessions 2 & 3: Textbooks in TESOL I & II
These two sessions look at the design, and evaluation of contemporary English Language teaching textbooks.

Session 4, 5 & 6: Designing Language Teaching Tasks I, II & III
These three sessions consider principles and practices in the design of tasks to teach grammar and vocabulary, and to practice and develop receptive and productive skills.

- 4 hours preparation per seminar = 24 hours
