Module replaces
ELEC 5470M Data Communications and Sensor NetworksThis module is not approved as an Elective
Objectives
To provide students with a knowledge and understanding of data communications networks, their use in a range of applications, and network security measures.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
- demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the principles behind the organisation and operation of communications networks;
- apply appropriate models to the analysis of communication systems, including a variety of network architectures and protocols;
- apply mathematical methods and modelling techniques to the analysis of communications networks and understand basic mechanisms for network flow control via the study of local area networks;
- appreciate the importance of routing and congestion control, eg in relation to wide area and global networks;
-appreciate the security issues associated with communications networks and understand the principles of network security protection
- understand high level protocols and more advanced systems with current and next generation technology;
- contribute to strategic planning, systems implementation and operation of data communications and sensor networks.
Syllabus
- The ISO/OSI 7-layer model, and TCP/IP structure. The use of layering, protocols, interfaces etc
- Data types, data communications, and networking terminology
- Data link control, particularly error control methods such as detection and correction, (parity checks, checksumming, CRC, - ARQ, sequence numbers), flow control, address resolution and wireless LANs.
- The network layer, IP datagrams, fragmentation and reassembly, IP addresses, routing principles (link-state, distance vector), Internet routing and QoS support.
- TCP/IP provision and IPv6 (and IPv6 and IPv4 interoperability) and mobility
- Basics of network security
