Module summary
This module gives students an introduction to how small renewable sourced powered generators can be integrated into the grid. Objectives
To provide students with a knowledge and understanding of the issues relating to interconnection of renewable sources and control and protection methods.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to use computer tools to model the performance of grid-connected microgeneration systems and make practical demonstrations.
Syllabus
- Grid connection requirements for renewable energy sourced generators and energy storage components (batteries, fuel cells).
- Grid connection via Single and three-phase Power converters. Bidirectional power flow calculations. Pulse-width modulation techniques including sine-triangle and space vector schemes.
- Grid synchronization techniques, including different phase-locking methods. Scalar and vector control methods for grid converters. Islanding detection methods.
- Introduction of power flow theory, nodal impedance power flow method and Newton-Raphson power flow method.
- Control of micro-grid, including active and reactive power control, Static VAR compensators including thyristor controlled reactors and thyristor switched capacitors.
- Power converter-based shunt, series and hybrid power compensators.
- Concept of total harmonic distortion factor.
