Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- employ an innovative approach to the development and implementation of an assessment strategy for the preregistration pharmacy performance standards set by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC);
- develop and lead best practice in conducting appraisals to facilitate the preregistration pharmacy trainees' continuing professional development (CPD);
- design and implement an evaluation framework to ensure rigorous and effective review of the training programme;
- critically evaluate strategies to manage and motivate the supervisory team assisting with the education and training of preregistraion pharmacy trainees;
- reflect on their assessment, appraisal and evaluation skills in the context of their CPD requirements.
Learning outcomes
- Application of knowledge to employ an innovative approach to the development and implementation of an assessment strategy for the pre-registration pharmacy performance standards set by the GPhC.
- Knowledge to develop and lead best practice in conducting performance reviews (appraisal) to facilitate the pre-registration trainees' continuing professional development (CPD).
- Knowledge to design and implement an evaluation framework to ensure rigorous and effective review of the pre-registration training programme.
- Knowledge to critically evaluate strategies to manage and motivate the supervisory team assisting with the education and training of the pre-registration trainee.
- Application of knowledge to reflect on their assessment, appraisal and evaluation skills in the context of their CPD requirements.
Syllabus
Familiarisation with the GPhC preregistraion pharmacy training requirements:
- Performance standards
- Underpinning knowledge/exam syllabus
- Cross-sector training.
Develop assessment tools for the GPhC performance standards:
- Objective structured clinical examinations
- Multiple choice questions
- Simulation exercises
- Observation checklists/records.
Strategies for providing constructive feedback and negotiation of action plans to enable the preregistration pharmacist trainee to achieve fitness for practice.
Managing the supervisory team:
- Staff support - preparation/training/mentoring
- Management structure - liaison/communication.
- Planning, conducting and following up an appraisal with a preregistraion pharmacy trainee
- Portfolio development and use in the context of the preregistraion pharmacy trainee's CPD
- Evaluation and quality assurance of the preregistration training programme
- Reflection on personal CPD.
