Objectives

The term abroad takes the form of study at the British Institute in Florence.

During this part of their degree programme, students will have the opportunity to:
- make substantial linguistic progress, over a wide range of registers, in respect of the target language;
- face the linguistic, intellectual and psychological challenges of living in another country;
- acquire a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the target culture;
- develop the social/personal/transferable skills necessary for gaining maximum benefit from living in a different community;
- seek to enhance their future employability by familiarizing themselves, when appropriate, with the world of work within the target culture, or by reflecting on the utility of skills that they are acquiring while living abroad for their future employment.

Learning outcomes
Students who spend the term in Italy should have been able to:
- improve their fluency and develop their ability to communicate appropriately, demonstrating an improved degree of grammatical accuracy in Italian
- consolidate and extend knowledge and understanding of structures and registers of Italian
- demonstrate improved receptive and productive skills, in a variety of contexts
- demonstrate an increased awareness and understanding of Italian culture and society.

Skills outcomes
Students will have increased ability to:
- use language creatively and communicate information and ideas
- demonstrate self-reliance and adaptability in developing an awareness and understanding of a culture and sociey other than their own
- exercise personal responsibility and decision making.


Syllabus

Students follow a course at the British Institute in Florence designed in collaboration with the Leeds Department of Italian. They also complete a personal research project.

Private study

Students will be expected to immerse themselves in the culture of the host country and follow the course at the British Institute.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will maintain contact with the year abroad tutor and will be monitored by teaching staff at the British Institute, Florence.
