Discovery students must have taken LAW1075 Introduction to the Law of Obligations.

Incoming Study Abroad students must have taken Contract Law at their home university.

Module summary

- Ever had a bad experience at work?- Do you know someone who had the employee from hell? This module covers the legal contexts in which employers and employees (and workers) can resolve their differences. The module examines the law relating to individual employment in its social context. It also introduces social and political arguments on relations at work. The module covers: - Employment Status and atypical work; the contract of employment (formation, variation and sources of contractual terms); statutory employment rights; and termination of employment (wrongful dismissal, unfair dismissal and redundancy). This module is taught by lectures and seminars in semester 1 and 2. Assessment is by one 2,000 word essay and one 2 hour examination. This module is mutually exclusive with LUBS3915.

Objectives

- to examine the law relating to individual employment and industrial relations in its social context
- to introduce social and political arguments on relations at work
- to develop analytical and problem-solving skills.

- A selection of rights will be looked at in depth
