Objectives

At the end of the module, the student should:
- have had experience in approaching an engineering problem in a systematic and rigorous manner;
- be able to apply logical reasoning based on a firm knowledge of engineering science and design, gained in earlier years;
- have developed powers of critical judgement;
- have developed effective communication skills.

Syllabus

Covering two terms, the project comprises some or all of the following elements: analysis, design, experimentation or computation. Hence, experience is gained of the type of project work commonly encountered in industry.

Each student carries out an individual project, although two or more projects may have a common theme and be part of a major investigation, under the supervision of an individual member of the academic staff.

At the end of the first term, the student presents an interim report covering the literature search and project planning. The subject of the project will be appropriate to the student's particular programme of study and, in the case of programmes joint with other Schools, may involve supervision or joint supervision by staff in the associated School. For MEng candidates, the project may provide an introduction to the level 4 project, MECH5840M.

Descriptions of projects are posted in the third term; students choose from among them and prepare for them during the summer vacation. Industrially-sponsored students are encouraged to propose projects deriving from vacation experience at their sponsoring firms.

Private study

- Students are to spend 1 hour preparing for and revising for each meeting with supervisor (22 hours in total);
- 10 hours to be spent writing the interim report;
- 30 hours writing the final project report.

The remaining 227 hours are to be spent carrying out the project.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The student will meet regularly with the supervisor. A log recording the supervisory meetings will be kept the student and submitted with the project report. Before the end of the first term, the student will submit a written review of the progress of the project.
