MUSS2312 Ensemble Performance for Visiting Music Students

Pre-requisite qualifications

Normally grade 8 ABRSM/Trinity Guildhall/Rockschool or equivalent standard, to be determined by audition/recording. Students will be placed in ensembles according to availability.

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should have developed their experience in practical music-making through participation in small or large ensembles. They will have improved their stylistic awareness and ensemble-playing skills. They will begin to shape the learning experience in collaboration with both staff and fellow students. Students' self-and peer- assessment skills will have become focussed, and their reliability and professionalism in conduct as performing musicians will be developing to a good standard.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- demonstrate skills required for ensemble performance
- engage practically in music-making and make some contribution to the shaping of the ensemble experience
- work effectively in a group
- engage in self-directed learning
- demonstrate an ability to cooperate with both staff and student ensemble directors


Syllabus

This varies from semester to semester and from student to student. Activities may include orchestral project, choral project, popular and world music ensembles, chamber ensembles, and new music ensemble, and will be both staff- and student-led (though a level of staff supervision will always be present).Projects are designed to reflect the competencies and orientations of the current cohort of students and will often respond to the School’s academic teaching and research. The nature of an individual's commitment in projects is negotiated with the module co-ordinator and ensemble directors.

Private study

Practical classes (at least 2 hours per week), plus extra scheduled ensemble rehearsal time, plus private practice, listening, sectional rehearsals, dress rehearsal, and performance(s). Weekly commitment will vary from student to student owing to the nature of the activities. Independent online learning will consist of accessing VLE materials, and may also include listening to specific resources.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Ongoing feedback from the director in rehearsals and sectionals (there may be peer feedback from section leaders).
