Pre-requisite qualifications
Successful completion of the first two years of an MBChB at a UK University or international equivalent. For international students, proof of proficiency in the English language will be required, a minimum of English GCSE Grade B or IELTS 7.5 (including 7.5 in spoken English), or equivalent.This module is not approved as a discovery module

Provide students with a supervised programme of research;Improve the students' skills of literature searching, scientific writing, data management and oral communication;
Develop the ability of students to present evidence-based judgements related to the outcomes of the research;
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Undertake a programme of research, with reference to hypothesis testing and project management;
Conduct a literature search and a critical review using library and computing facilities;
Prepare a report in the style of a scientific paper submitted to a journal;
Make coherent oral presentations on the aims and the outcomes of the research to academic audiences and be able to respond to questions and justify their conclusions.

Research skills specific for the type of research project undertaken (eg laboratory methods, data analysis)
Syllabus
Students undertake a research project of six months' duration which is usually laboratory-based. Before selecting a project the student is encouraged to discuss the details of the research work with the prospective supervisor. Each project is supervised by a member of the University staff but, in addition, students may liaise with other students and staff. Each student will make a presentation in November on the aims of his/her research project. The presentation will be marked by the tutorial group using criteria established by the group prior to presentation. This is a formative experience.
The student submits a literature review after the Christmas break and a journal-style research paper in May for assessment. The final component of the assessment is the 10 minute presentation at the end of the year.

Private study
Each student conducts a research project, with the collection of data and interpreting it with reference to published evidence. The project may be laboratory or patient based and involves the student working closely with a supervisor who may be a member of University or NHS staff.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
