Objectives
On completion of this module, students will be able to:- describe rocks and rock masses in a quantitative manner to be supplemented by normal geological descriptions;
- describe the state of stress of an element of rock;
- devise a testing program for the characterisation of rock materials;
- use appropriate rock mass classification schemes to give first order design parameters for design, and to be aware of the limitations of such methodologies.
Syllabus
1. Stress and strain measurement and analysis; principal stresses; Mohr's circle. Strain analysis in two dimensions; Mohr circle of strain; resistance gauges and transducers. Rosette theory.
2. Behaviour of materials; elasticity and elastic constants; non-elastic behaviour.
3. Brittle fracture; laboratory test; ISRM standards; fracture criteria, Coulomb-Navier, Mohr, Griffiths, tensile strain. Triaxial behaviour; applications.
4. The state of stress in the crust. Stress fields; measurement around openings in rock; lining pressures, rock anisotropy, in situ stress measurements and load monitoring. Model tests.
5. Rock mass classification, NGI Q index, RMR, GSI and other classification schemes, limitations of rock mass classification, foundations on rock.
6. Tunnelling, tunnel support, NATM and tunnelling methods in soft ground.
