Objectives
As part of the MA programme students will be required to write a 12,000 word dissertation on a topic of their choice in Middle Eastern and/or Islamic Studies.Writing a dissertation will provide students with an opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired throughout the programme to a research project of their own choosing and to focus in-depth on a subject area of their interest.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will have demonstrated their ability to conduct independent and theory-driven research in a chosen area related to Middle Eastern/Islamic studies and to employ appropriate research methods in the design of their projects.
Skills outcomes
Ability to design and carry out independent research and apply appropriate research methods for the study of social science phenomena.
Syllabus
The syllabus for this module corresponds with the stages of the research project undertaken by the student. Typically, these include:
- Identifying research topic / problem
- Development of a project plan
- Development of hypotheses / research questions
- Literature review & secondary research
- Data collection (if part of project)
- Analysis of results
- Development of conclusions
- Suggestions for future research
- Writing up the project.

This consists of the planning, research and writing up of the dissertation.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Student progress will be monitored using the following methods:- Designated feedback sessions (one per semester)
