Module summary

The module provides an in-depth study into the nature of Modern Arab media. It will provide a critical overview on the development of Arab media, and examine the aims, objectives and programmes of transnational channels such as Al-Jazeera Arabic, Al-Hurra and Al-Arabiya. It will also examine the similarities and differences in broadcasting between these channels. The module will attempt to examine the impact of Arab media on the Arab public sphere. Students will also be introduced to the development of New Media in the Arab world. Freedom of expression and censorship in the Arab world will constitute part of the discussion in this module.

Objectives

The main objective of this module is to provide an overview on the Arabic media development since its establishment until today. The discussion of the development of Arab media will take into consideration many elements, some of which are political, cultural and social. The module shall examine comprehensively the main objectives behind the establishment of printed and audio-visual media. The module shall also explore the relationship between media and the Arabic public sphere. The module will also examine the production and consumption of news and information in the Arab world. We shall also refer to the great impact of some of these broadcasting outlets on the Arab regimes and population. Apart from the traditional media, the module will introduce students to the usage of New Media in the Arab world. We will focus on the use of internet, social networking sites, bloggings... etc. The module will be divided into five main parts: The first part will cover the development of Arabic media since its birth until the 1990s. The second part will focus on transnational Arab media. The third will look at print media such as Al-Sharq al-Awsat, al-Hayyat, Al-quds Al-Arabi. The fourth part will introduce students to theories of discourse analysis in order to enable them to acquire the tools of dealing with Arab media discourse. The final part will be devoted to the New Media: internet, social networking sites, blogging...etc.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have acquired an in-depth understanding of the theoretical literature in the field and a good grounding in the patterns of Modern Arabic Media.

In addition to acquiring knowledge in the discipline, by the end of the course students should have acquired various transferable skills, including communication, essay writing, time management and presentation skills.

Skills outcomes
Critical & analytical thinking, ability to construct coherent arguments, communication and presentation skills, self-discipline and punctuality.


Syllabus

The topics covered in this course include amongst others:

1. Overview on the development of print and audio-visual media in the Arab world
This section shall provide a general review of the print and audio-visual media. It will look at its broadcasting strategy, its progress and its impact on the viewers. It shall touch upon some historical aspects which have hindered or underpinned the development of Arab Media.

2. Transnational Arab media
This part of the module will examine the similarities and differences in broadcasting between different transnational Arab media. It aims to acquaint the reader with the broadcasting style of this type of media. It shall provide a comprehensive analysis of the aims and objectives, policies and the target audience of different channels and radios.

3. New Arab media, New discourse
This part will mainly look at the change of broadcasting discourse in Arab media since Mid 1990s. Students will be introduced to theories of discourse analysis in order to be able to understand the social, cultural and political variables that contribute to the production of Arab media discourse. Translation of the source text will be available for students who have no knowledge of Arabic.

4. Globalisation, Democracy and Arab media
This part will consider Arabic media in light of the globalisation and worldwide competition. It shall look at how globalisation has affected Arab media discourse and broadcasting.

5. New Arab media
This part will examine the development of the New Media in the Arab world. It will examine the use of internet and other forms of social networking (facebook, youtube). In this part we will also look at media and censorship in the Arab world.
