Module summary

This module enables the students to analyse the linguistic and stylistic features of different Arabic and English legal texts. It combines theory and practice through allowing students to translate different text types, determine the translation procedures for the difficult linguistic, culture-specific and system-bound areas and critically comment on them. By giving students an opportunity to develop a specialized area of translation expertise, this module will be useful for those wishing to go on to work as professional legal translators.

Objectives

This module enables students to build an in-depth understanding of the main linguistic and stylistic features of Arabic and English legal texts. They will also be able to figure out the difficult linguistic areas of Arabic/ English legal texts and determine the appropriate translation procedures for translating these areas. By so doing, students will develop a hands on ability as well enhance their decision-making, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to
- identify the linguistic and stylistic features of different English and Arabic legal texts;
- identify the difficult linguistic, culture-specific and system-bound areas of legal translation between English and Arabic;
- determine the strategic decisions for the translation of these areas;
- practice English-Arabic translation for various legal text-types;
- analyse parallel English-Arabic legal texts and critically comment on the strategies of translating them.

1. Legal text types and features of English and Arabic legal texts.
2. Common difficulties of legal translation with specific reference to English and Arabic legal texts.
3. Lexical, culture-specific and system-based difficulties of translating English-Arabic legal texts.
4. Syntactic difficulties of translating English-Arabic legal texts.
5. Translation of leases, certificates, wills and deeds.
6. Translation of contracts and statutes.
7. Translation of judicial texts.

Private study

The time for private study and independent learning covers independent reading, preparation of translations to be discussed in class and working on two translation assignments.
