Objectives

During this part of their degree programme, students will have the opportunity to:
- make substantial linguistic progress, over a wide range of registers, in respect of the target language;
- face the linguistic, intellectual and psychological challenges of living in another country;
- acquire a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the target culture;
- develop the social/personal/transferable skills necessary for gaining maximum benefit from living in a different community;
- seek to enhance their future employability by familiarizing themselves, when appropriate, with the world of work within the target culture, or by reflecting on the utility of skills that they are acquiring while living abroad for their future employment.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the year students should have provided evidence of:
- ability to write, speak and communicate in modern standard Arabic
- holding conversations in modern standard Arabic with native speakers of the language
- awareness of the social and cultural aspects of the Arab world

Skills outcomes
Students will have had the opportunity:
- to acquire language and cultural skills which enable them to pursue a career in the Arab world
- to develop and practise the ability to live independently and exercise personal responsibility
- to develop and practise communication skills


Syllabus

The Year Abroad Program lasts for one academic year from the second week of September to the end of May. This an intensive academic program of 20 hours a week taught by professional teachers of Arabic as a foreign language in Fez, Morocco and Cairo, Egypt. Teaching is conducted in Arabic only, but English is occasionally used to explain a problem. Teaching includes: Arabic grammar, speaking, listening and writing. Translation and Moroccan/Egyptian Arabic are also taught. Moroccan/Egyptian Arabic, however, is taught and assessed in semester 1 only. The other five modules are taught in semesters 1 and 2. During the first four weeks of the program, our students are urged to live with a Moroccan/Egyptian family.

Private study

Students are expected to prepare for the modules and complete module coursework prior to and after classes. They are expected to complete grammar exercises, write essays, prepare for their conversation classes as well as listening classes. Some of the coursework constitutes part of the assessment process.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students' progress is monitored weekly through the weekly drills and exercises, and also through continuous assessment, tests and exams held in January and May. Students receive regular feedback from their tutors who assess them in all Arabic language skills. Students' attendance and progress are well monitored and the year abroad tutor receives reports from the host institute every semester. Students' exam results are also sent to the year abroad tutor at the end of each semester.
