Module summary

The aim of this module is to introduce the student to a range of professional issues relevant to healthcare science. Students will learn in an inter-professional setting where appropriate. Content will be based on the 6 values of the NHS Constitution and focus will be given to acquisition of knowledge and understanding that underpin reflective, ethical and value-based practice. Information literature and evidence based practice will underpin the module and a study skills workshop will ensure the students are signposted to the requirements of degree level study.

Objectives

The module will begin to develop the student’s knowledge and understanding of the nature and expectations of their chosen profession and how their profession integrates with the other professions represented in the inter-professional sessions on the module.
Students will begin to explore the fundamental concepts which underpin contemporary healthcare practice. They will be introduced to the historical, cultural and legislative changes which have influenced the development of the modern NHS on a national and local level.
Reference will be made to key national guidelines (e.g. NHS constitution, HEE guidance, PSRB guidance) as well as the University of Leeds Partnership.

5. Be knowledgeable of the quality improvement structures and processes that apply to healthcare science
6. Understand the concept of ethical practice in relation to respect and dignity
7. Review the psychology of health/sociology of health and social care
8. Understand reflection in terms of their own practice
9. Discuss professionalism and inter-professional working including conduct
10. Understand the information literacy, evidence based practice and study skills that underpin the module.
