Module summary

This module introduces the key theories and strategies surrounding adult aural rehabilitation. It covers the technological, psycho-social and therapeutic aspects of rehabilitation.

Objectives

The aim of this module is :
1. To provide detailed knowledge of the principles of the effect of hearing impairment on communication
2. To identify adult aural rehabilitation strategies available for use in good clinical practice.
3. To provide students with an understanding of the technical knowledge of hearing aids, fitting and verification strategies required for good clinical practice.
4. To integrate Hearing aid technologies and fitting strategies with psycho-social models of rehabilitation

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Discuss the perceptual effects of hearing impairment and their effect on communication
2. Discuss the fundamental principles of adult aural audiological rehabilitation
3. Choose intervention and management strategies for adults with hearing impairment
4. Explain a range of hearing aid technologies based on underlying theory and practical laboratory sessions
5. Analyse findings from clinical laboratory based practical sessions
6. Discuss the role of statutory and regulatory bodies, research governance frameworks, evidence based practice and issues surrounding data protection and intellectual property regulations in the advancement of auditory rehabilitation services

WHO ICF model of hearing impairment

The clinical pathway for adults with hearing impairment
Multi-sensory impairments
