Module summary

This module enables Healthcare Science students to explore the management of particular groups of more complex patients. It supports learners to demonstrate how independent learning can impact on professional practice in Healthcare Science. Learners will identify an area of interest from a range of relevant predetermined topic areas. They will engage in a process of reflection, reading and writing to produce evidence of personal learning.

Objectives

Learners will be able to identify their learning needs, produce a learning contract, manage learning resources and engage in critical reflection within a specific topic area of Healthcare Science.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will:
1. generate a learning contract and a range of learning resources within a specific topic area of Healthcare Science
2. examine an appropriate Healthcare Science subject in depth
3. critically appraise the chosen subject from a range of theoretical perspectives
4. evaluate and discuss the implications of the chosen subject for their own practice

Skills outcomes
Independent literature-based learning
Ability to critically find, use, summarise and communicate literature-based evidence and make logical conclusions and recommendations for clinical practice as appropriate

Syllabus

Students will be expected to generate their own learning contract and agree this with their appointed academic supervisor. This will include the identification of objectives for their study, key resources and planned actions in meeting objectives. Students will select a topic/subject from a predetermined list of relevant Healthcare Science topic areas. These are:
Audiology:
Theories, assessment, management and treatment of tinnitus
Theories of vestibular dysfunction and its assessment and management
Paediatric audiological assessment and management
Use of specialist hearing instruments such as cochlear implants
Cardiology:
Assessment and management of Heart Failure patients
Utilisation of TAVI in the management of aortic stenosis
Psychological implications and management of ICD therapy
Assessment and management of patients with Tetralogy of Fallots
Within these topics students will develop a critical appraisal of key issues and discuss from a range of theoretical perspectives. Application of knowledge/topic/subject to their Healthcare Science discipline will be highlighted and defended. As part of the process of developing their learning contract, students will develop their own reading list for the module.
