Module summary

The module will provide the opportunity to apply learning to work based issues and problems.This module allows students to design, negotiate and manage their own study relevant to their working experience.Students can build their project around a theme, topic or investigation, which directly relates to their working circumstances and previous experience.

Objectives

A work-based learning module allows students to design, negotiate and manage their own study relevant to their working experience.
Students can build their study around a theme, topic or investigation, which directly relates to their working circumstances and previous experience.

Students will meet with the module leader to discuss their area of study. The area of study must be different to that studied in any other negotiated study module – e.g. ARCS 5254 Focussed Negotiated Imaging Practice; ARCS 5255M Negotiated Imaging Practice and ARCS 5015M Professional Work Based Learning 2

Learning outcomes
The module will provide the opportunity to apply learning to work based issues and problems.

On completion of this module, the student will be able to:

- identify an appropriate work based project
- critically evaluate literature relating to the project
- provide a rationale for undertaking the project
- describe what they wish to achieve /learning objectives
- design effective methods to address the question posed
- design effective outcome measures
- communicate the project outcomes appropriately

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to

- Identify, design and undertake an appropriate work based project.
- Communicate the project findings effectively by written presentation


Syllabus

The module gives students the opportunity to focus on issues of real concern to themselves and their work place. They can use their work place as a centre of learning, supported by the expertise and resources of the university.
Work based learning includes the following features: -
- It relates to a study chosen by the student.
- Learning arises from undertaking the study.
- It is work based.
- Work based learning may be associated with the study of clinical or management issues.
- It is autonomously managed by the student.
- Learning takes place without direct instruction or formal tuition. Learners are expected to take a large measure of responsibility for carrying out the project and learning will take place as an associated activity.
Work based learning involves people managing their own learning through topic based study aimed at enhancing personal and professional development.

Private study

Private study to include: e-learning; literature searches, seminar and assessment preparation, independent supporting investigation & critical evaluation for summative assessment.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- Group Tutorial incorporating discussion of proposed study,
- Submission of 200 word synopsis.
- Individual tutorials with project supervisors and student to evaluate progress at regular intervals during the project or equivalent email/phone communication. (3 x 1 hour)
