Module summary
Image before Art proposes to explore the major aspects of medieval art making. It is proposed that such a study of pre-modern art has a liberating potential for you as art historians and as art practitioners; the module allows us to reclaim a 'usable past', before the modern commodifying forces of the art market and the individual 'genius' artist/author come into play. The challenge of the module is to come to an understanding of the complex and dialectical links between art and religion/religiosity; especially the institutionalised aspects of medieval religious art can be very alien. We will work through the major categories of the cult image, the narrative image and the allegorical/symbolic image. Objectives
