Objectives

On completion of this independent study module, students should:
- have pursued in greater depth then in options a topic of their own choice;
- have developed advanced research skills and put them in to practice.

The final outcome of this module is a BA dissertation. The dissertation should take the form of a coherently argued, thoroughly researched and carefully edited written work which is based on and clearly reflects the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the programme and the dissertation process.

Learning outcomes
With critical engagement suitable for a level three student, students should have developed:
- Independent research skills,
- Subject specific knowledge beyond that developed in modules,
- The ability to argue points coherently.

Skills outcomes
- Independent project planning and development
- Time management
- Advanced use of (specialist) libraries, archives, bibliographies and electronic resources
- Presentation of written work of substantial length which meets academic standards in form and content.


Syllabus

In semester two of level 2, students will be asked to submit a proposal to show a critical grasp of the bibliographic and historiographic problems of the intended subject.

After approval by the module team this will lead to the production, under supervision, of a detailed proposal or equivalent of c4,000 words and a dissertation of 10,000-12,000 (excluding footnotes, bibliography and appendices).

390 hours comprised of researching, writing and editing on dissertation.
