Module summary

The module is practical-based and aims to demonstrate how various techniques can be used to test biological samples and exploit organisms. While the practicals do complement some of the theory taught in the lecture-based module BLGY1211 (Applied Biology and Agriculture), it is not necessary to take this module.

Objectives

The key objective of this module is to provide training in a range of experimental techniques, and data collection, analysis and interpretation. Through this training technical competence will be developed.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should;
- Demonstrate a familiarity with the basic concepts and information covered in the practicals;
- Demonstrate a familiarity with practical competencies and techniques used in applied biology;
- An understanding of the experimental techniques that underpin knowledge of applied biology.


Syllabus

The module is practical-based. The practicals cover domestication of plants, pollution associated with animal production, composition of fat in various foods, plant pathology, and brewing.

Practicals include:
- Phosporus content of animal excretion
- Plant genetics
- Alcohol fermentation
- Fractional distillation
- Industrial microbiology
- GM Technology.

Private study

- Preparation and reading for practicals and lectures.
- Completion of assignments
- Revision for MCQ test.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Summative assessment with feedback on practical reports, worksheets, and an end-of-module MCQ test will provide opportunities to monitor progress.

In addition, demonstrators as well as academic staff will be available during practicals to provide guidance on progress, which will include monitoring entries into laboratory note books which all students will use to keep a record of their practical work.
