Objectives

The aim of the module is to develop the thought processes and essential communication skills required to be a successful professional. This includes compiling, interpreting and communicating scientific information and undertaking a mock job application procedure.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should have further developed their abilities:
- in the processes involved in scientific research;
- to work in a team;
- to search, access and reference scientific literature and data correctly;
- to write a properly structured scientific essay or report;
- to present their results orally or in a poster;
- to enhance their experience of the job application process, including writing CVs, covering letters and attending mock interviews.

Skills outcomes
During the course of the module you will learn to research information, analyse it and present it in various formats for example as a literature review, abstract or an oral presentation using appropriate visual aids. You will also be given exercises in data analysis and/or experimental design. However these skills are also of value to future employers as most graduate jobs whether in biology or more broadly require the ability to research, analyse and present information in a variety of formats. You will have an opportunity to prepare a CV and job application and undertake a mock interview and obtain feedback.


Syllabus

Research is the most exciting aspect of science and of biology. It is only through rigorous observation and carefully designed experimental programmes that we expand our knowledge of the world around us.

Being able to design and carry out experiments, analyse and present the results, is therefore paramount to being a biologist.

This module will allow students to work on small research projects as part of a team, supervised by a tutor, to discover new things about selected study systems and develop their research skills for the future.

Private study

- 44 hours spent researching literature, writing individual reports, and preparing presentations during Project 1.
- 44 hours spent researching literature, writing individual reports, and preparing presentations during Project 2.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- Four formal tutorials over the course of each project to ensure both individuals and groups are progressing satisfactorily.
- Upload of individual reports into group discussion rooms on VLE to be monitored to confirm contribution and understanding.
