Objectives

On completion of the module, students should be familiar with the theory and industrial applications of particle comminution and classification, solid/liquid separation and materials handling systems as used in a wide range of chemical, minerals and related operations. They should also have developed a range of skills relating to experimental design, problem solving, data recording and analysis, team working and report writing.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students will have acquired a working knowledge of particle process engineering systems used in the chemical, food, mineral and related industries and will have an understanding of the theory and mathematical techniques used in the design and operation of such processes. They will also have developed a range of practical skills, including data gathering and analysis, report writing, team working, problem solving and identifying sources of experimental error.


Syllabus

Comminution and sizing - crushing and grinding equipment, comminution theories and energy requirements, particle breakage mechanisms, particle classification systems.
Materials handling - design and application of storage systems and discharge equipment.
Solid/liquid separation - theory, design and applications of sedimentation, filtration, centrifuge and thermal drying systems.
Experimental - students work in teams and undertake five experiments covering a range of unit operations. Individual reports are submitted for each experiment, in which the data gathered are critically analysed in the light of current literature and conclusions are drawn.
