Module summary

This module provides a theoretical and practical introduction to the renewable technologies: wind, solar, hydro, ocean, and geothermal. Comparative and broader energy topics essential for renewable integration are covered: batteries and fuel cells, electricity networks, policy, trends, and financial and carbon costing. This module includes laboratory sessions for wind, solar, wave, and fuel cells.

Objectives

The objectives of this module are:
- to deliver an introduction to the technology, application, and resource for the main renewable technologies, enabling the students to solve technology-specific problems;
- to deliver a broader context of renewable sources, enabling the students to complete implementation and technology-comparative questions, to develop practical laboratory skills and key skills of analysis concerning renewable energy sources.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should:
- have detailed knowledge of solar, wind, hydroelectric, ocean, thermal energy, battery, fuel cell and electricity network technologies;
- be able to solve quantitative technology-specific renewable energy problems;
- be able to discuss renewable energy trends, policy, and other factors that impact integration of renewable technologies into our electricity network;
- have the ability to perform comparative calculations regarding renewable energy resource, capacity, storage, costs, and carbon;
- be able to discuss the fundamental and practical factors that limit performance of renewable technologies.


Syllabus

Introduction - technology overview, capacity factors, carbon intensity, levelised costs, energy trends, energy policy, commercial awareness.
Solar energy - solar resource, photovoltaics, solar thermal, system technology.
Wind energy - wind resource, turbine aerodynamics, system technology.
Hydroelectric and ocean energy - energy resource, hydroelectric schemes, wave power, tidal power, system technology.
Thermal energy - energy resource, geothermal energy, heat pumps, system technology.
Energy storage and electricity networks - batteries, fuel cells and electrolysis, distribution and transmission.

Private study

Independent online learning:
Each week students will complete an online MCQ or a set of homework questions, extending the lecture material. This is formative assessment, and will not count towards module marks. Feedback will be provided in a later lecture. (1 hour per lecture or approximately 20 hours)
Students will be required to follow a programme of private study supporting the selected renewable energy experiments. Online materials will include a video introduction to each technology. (approximately 10 hours)

Private study:
Review of lecture notes (approximately 20 hours)
Directed reading of texts recommended in lectures (approximately 20 hours)
Preparation and writing of lab reports (approximately 30 hours)
Exam revision (approximately 40 hours)

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Formative assessment will be the online MCQ or set homework, which will cover material delivered during the lectures and extended online. Summative assessment will be marking of the laboratory reports, which will further monitor student progress.
