Objectives

To enable students to gain deeper insights into engineeirng processes and systems for wastewater management, including energy and resource recovery; and apply knowledge gained to a real-world problem culminating in the submission of a design coursework.

Learning outcomes
At the end of the module, the students will:

i) Gain deeper insights into engineering processes and systems for wastewater management;
ii) Understand opportunities offered from recovering and recycling of wastes;
iii) Be able to select and size the key unit operations for wastewater treatment facilities;
iv) Estimate energy value of wastes; and understand energy and resource recovery from wastewater;
v) Apply knowledge gained in lectures, site visit and general reading to a real world problem which will require submission of a design coursework.


Syllabus

Wastewater collection systems; Flow and load to the works and its composition; EU Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive and Fresh Water Fisheries Directive; Inlet works (screens, grit removal, FOG, flow measurement); Design and operation of primary sedimentation tanks; Biological treatment in the activated sludge process; Final sedimentation tanks; Sludge management; Energy and resource recovery.
