Module summary

This series of lectures examines a broad spectrum of issues currently impacting upon the practice of Branding Design and looks ahead to consider those issues that are likely to become increasingly important in the future.The key concepts of design thinking and human-centred design will be introduced as the starting point for discussion and study. Students will then be required to apply these concepts on a practical basis, working collaboratively within a group project

Objectives

This module gives students the opportunity to:
• Apply a theoretical perspective to design practice, informed by a deeper awareness of the issues and challenges Branding Design faces currently, and will face in the future.
• Understand, evaluate and respond to design needs and problems with creative solutions.
• Participate in a group project.
• Develop professional design skills.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will have provided evidence of being able to:
1. Critically and creatively evaluate current issues, advanced scholarship and research that impacts on the practice of Branding Design.
2. Take a proactive and self-reflective role in working with others and contribute to the implementation and execution of a group project.
3. Present research and design solutions in a visual, verbal and written format, to a professional standard.

Private study

In order to gain confidence to develop and articulate their own ideas, students will engage in private study.

Each lecture is supported by material that is available on the Blackboard VLE. This material provides links to appropriate journal papers, books, videos and websites. Digital copies of the lectures will be also available on the VLE so that students can follow up in a systematic and structured manner.

Students will bring and discuss their ideas to the lectures, allowing them to gain confidence in their own critical thinking. Students will also be asked to find and provide design examples to show their understanding of the theoretical content addressed in the lectures.

- Literature search and reading: 40 hours
- Group meetings: 20 hours
- Independent research and preparation: 47.5 hours
- Preparation of visual, written and verbal assessed outcomes: 20 hours

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored through:
• Regular attendance at lectures and seminars (absences dealt with through the normal School channels).
• Participation in lectures.
• Feedback in seminars.
• Group tutorials (personal tutorials will be available by appointment).
• Each group will make a formative seminar presentation in week 7

The re-sit will be a project brief and 2000 word report, which will be undertaken individually. For part-time students an ad-hoc programme will be negotiated if necessary to address group work development.
