Objectives

This module aims to developed and expand an understanding of the fundamental principles of the fashion industry. Acquire an appreciation of the major developments in design & product development innovation. Understand the critical issues affecting the fashion industry globally, have an enhanced awareness of the economic and commercial role of design within the fashion industry. Developed an understanding of global concepts relating to the role design plays in improved competitive performance.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental principals of the fashion industry;
- research independent areas of interest in relation to the development of innovative industrial fashion practice;
- demonstrate individual & creative thought within stated commercial parameters;
- show evidence of resourcefulness, self-discipline and motivation;
- plan, manage and execute individual schedules.


Syllabus

The aim of the module is to introduce students to the fundamental concepts and principles of the fashion industry. Delivered through a series of lectures, students will be introduced to the critical issues affecting the fashion industry globally.
Analysis of these issues will be paramount and the students will be encouraged to work independent of tutored time, researching, analysing and discussing innovations in design and product development in relation to the fashion industry.
Emphasis will be placed on the exploration of design and technology in relation to developing competitive strengths. The role of Trade Shows and Exhibitions will be explored and the global perspective will be discussed and analysed.

An important aspect is the ability to examine the subject area within a wider context and show an informed understanding of relevant sociological, cultural, technical and commercial aspects.

This module will reward future thought and development in innovative industrial practice, whether this be ecological, technological or ethical based

The above work equates to a 3,750 - 4,500 word assignment. Students will produce 1 X 1000 word study Proposal & time plan at week 3 which will receive feedback only.
