Module summary
The second course on personal and professional development will consider at a basic level the roles of the dental surgeon as a professional and their relationships with patients and colleagues. It will give consideration to some of the tensions that may arise between personal and professional responsibilities / behaviours and you will be asked to consider the meaning of 'professionalism' and to discuss its relevance. The central importance of the patient's perspective will be discussed, as will interactions with the dental team. Opportunity will be provided for communication skills training in simulated and real-life settings. Your behaviour in clinical treatment sessions will continue to be assessed in terms of the developing professional relationships expressed. The 'progress file' will be central to the process and further meetings with your personal tutor will review learning goals from level 1, encouraging open but confidential discussion of your clinical and academic strengths and weaknesses. Learning goals for the next years of the programme will also be agreed.A reflective assignment on the nature of the oral health professional will be conducted, involving small group work and culminating in a poster presentation and a short individual essay. Objectives
