Module summary

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are injuries and disorders that affect the human body’s movement or the musculoskeletal system. This module will provide an overview of current status of musculoskeletal diseases and related research in clinical orthopaedics, rheumatology and dentistry. From this model, the students will gain knowledge on how to carry out translational research to solve the clinical problems in musculoskeletal disease. Teaching will be delivered by experts in the area in the form of lectures, seminars and workshops.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to ...
The aim of this module is to inform the students on the translation of musculoskeletal research, including but not limited to the knowledge of major musculoskeletal diseases, current advance on related research methodology and outcomes, as well as the translational aspects in this field.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, the students should have provided evidence of being able to:
1. Demonstrate the scholarship skills required to critically and creatively evaluate current literature and issues in biomedical research related to musculoskeletal diseases.
2. Proactively formulate and critically evaluate bioscience research ideas, hypotheses and demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of techniques and research methods in the fields of orthopaedics, rheumatology and dentistry.
3. Demonstrate and combine in-depth, expert knowledge and mastery of clinically relevant and basic science and skills required to successfully contribute to future translational research at the forefront of musculoskeletal diseases.
4. Exhibit advanced scholarship of interdisciplinary translational research and an advance understanding of how the alliance between basic science and clinical research in musculoskeletal diseases is harnessed for the development of novel diagnosis methods and therapies.
5. Demonstrate a sophisticated understanding and proficiency in the rigour, ethical and research governance required for scientific and clinical research and the translation of findings into treatments and healthcare in musculoskeletal diseases.
6. Exhibit a proactive and self-reflective approach and the ability to develop professional relationships through lectures, seminars and workshops/presentations to demonstrate achieving high standards in research principles and knowledge.

Skills outcomes
The clinical need for treatment in musculoskeletal diseases in orthopaedics, rheumatology and dentistry;
Introduction of research methodology in musculoskeletal research (e.g. biochemical simulation, cell culture and imaging) Translational research in immune mediated inflammatory diseases;
Translational research in stem cell therapy;
Stem cell aging and its role in musculoskeletal diseases;
The application of molecular biological technology and gene therapy on musculoskeletal research;
The design of biomaterial for musculoskeletal tissue repair and regeneration;
Pre-clinical research on skeletal tissue engineering;
From bench to bedside: such as the treatment of early caries lesions using biomimetic self-assembling peptides and/or repairing tendon and ligament using tissue engineering approached.


Syllabus

This module will introduce the various aspects of translational research in musculoskeletal diseases via lectures, seminars and workshops.
Topics will include:
• the current clinical need/challenges in orthopaedics, rheumatology and dentistry,
• advance research in related areas,
• commercialisation/translation of research finding into clinical diagnostics, treatment methods.
This module has been designed to meet the needs of both basic science and clinical students who are intending to conduct translational research in musculoskeletal diseases and regenerative medicine in related fields.
Emphasis will be placed on common musculoskeletal disorders and related research methodology, such as:
• immunology,
• stem cell biology,
• biomaterials, and
• tissue repair/regeneration,
• routes used towards commercialisation and translation.
Introductory lectures are given by staff on these topics (both in dental school and medical school) - clinicial, biologist, molecular biologist, material scientist, histologist, and bioengineer as wells as speaker(s) from industry.

Private study

Students will be required to use private study time to review and read literature related to these topics. Students will spend private study time to prepare for lectures, open discussion/journal club presentations about their views on Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD), research development and translation related issues.
Private study time must also be dedicated to the production of the essay outline, final essay (2500 word) and to revise material to prepare for the closed book examination.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be assessed through monitoring of student engagement and performance within seminars and workshops which will include a journal club presentation to be formatively assessed, which will be carried out in the early stages of semester 2 to monitor the student progress.
