Objectives

To provide an introduction to the development of vernacular fiction and popular theatre in China from the medieval period to the end of the 19th Century through the reading of selected excerpts from short stories, novels and plays.

Learning outcomes
- To gain a basic appreciation of some classic works in Chinese fiction and drama which are still widely read today;
- To gain an enhanced ability to read and appreciate modern Chinese literature through reading works which have greatly influenced the Chinese literary tradition;
- To gain a basic understanding of the linguistic and stylistic differences between the pre-modern Chinese vernacular language and the modern language.


Syllabus

The following Chinese texts will be read in detail:
- the short story Nianyu guanyin (The Jade Guanyin);
- chapters from Shuihu (The Water Margin), Xiyouji (The Journey to the West), Honglou meng (The Dream of the Red Chamber) and Lao Can youji (The Travels of Lao Can);
- and acts from the plays Dou E yuan (The injustice to Dou E) and Mudan Ting (The Peony Pavilion).
