Module summary

This module will explore the complexities of historical and contemporary development of China and will look at the political, economic and social changes of China over the past century and into the new millennium. Students will learn to apply development theories and concepts to analyse the Chinese experiences within a global context.

Objectives

This module aims at exploring the complexities of historical and contemporary development of China, applying development theories and concepts to the analysis of the Chinese experiences and situating China's specific experiences in a wider global development context.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- understand political, economic and social changes of China over the past century and into the new millennium;
- develop an appreciation of the major dimensions of change since the post-Mao reforms;
- examine and analyse the process of transition from state socialism to a market-oriented economy in China;
- understand the opportunities and challenges that China faces in economic and human development in an age of increasing globalisation;
- critically assess the different approaches to development in the Chinese context and their broader implications for development theory and practice.

- China and globalisation.
