Objectives
On completion of this module, students should:- be familiar with the pronunciation and tones;
- be able to answer questions on taped materials the basis of the textbook;
- be able to recognise and write approximately 450 words, and to read simple prose passages;
- be able to understand the essential features of Chinese sentence structure (subject-predicate; attributive; interrogatives, etc.);
- be able to translate sentences from Chinese into English and vice versa;
- be able to type Chinese Character on a computer and master basic Chinese IT skills.
Skills outcomes
Basic written and oral communication skills in Chinese; translation skills.
Syllabus
Pronunciation:
- Pronunciation and tones are introduced in the first three weeks. Practice continues in language laboratory classes
Comprehension;
- Language laboratory classes are held weekly in which students listen to taped materials and answer questions on them.
Script and Reading;
- The elements and stroke order of the script are studied. In order to achieve recognition and written mastery of approximately 450 words, readings of selected Chinese prose passages are included.
Grammar:
- The essential features of Chinese sentence structure (subject-predicate; attributive; interrogatives, etc.) are introduced with supporting vocabulary items.
Translation:
- (a) Sentence translation exercises are used to reinforce grammar points and vocabulary;
- (b) As language skills develop, translation of passages, incorporating grammar and vocabulary are included.
Basic Chinese IT skills
- Character typing and basic Chinese IT skills are introduced.

206 hours of private study including preparation and review of lectures; written assignments and character practice; listening, pronunciation and IT practice; test and exam preparation.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
- Translation exercises in the core lectures.- Students report on the main grammatical points in drill classes.
- Monitoring exercises including sound discrimination, character writing, dictation and translation in drill classes and in listening comprehension sessions.
- Exercises on computer in the IT sessions.
