Pre-requisite qualifications

This modules does not have any pre-requisite qualifications. However, it is anticipated that the students who would benefit most from this module will be looking to gain work experience (which could be summer or part-time work) since starting at Leeds and/or participate in the year out Work Placement Elective Module during their third year, (the CSER8000 Work Placement Module is to be introduced to Level 2 for 2013-2014)

Module summary

This module is tailored specifically to Level 1 education undergraduates.It aims to provide a framework within which education students can learn about themselves and make the most of the work experience and career opportunities open to them whilst studying at Leeds. It is suitable for students who are interested in finding out more about themselves and researching what graduates do with an education degree and who are interested in exploring the different options (including work experience) open to them and how to compete effectively in applying for these.

Objectives

The Module will encourage and develop all students to:
- Have the opportunity to reflect on their own learning and development therefore developing a clearer picture of their own skills, interests and personal characteristics in relation to careers and work experience open to them with an education degree.
- Learn about what they need to do in order to develop their networks and employability and the resources, support and opportunities available to create and develop these.
- Understand what they need to be doing and how they can do this, so they can compete effectively in the work experience and job market.
- Develop a greater awareness of the support and opportunities available to them at the University of Leeds and how making the most of it could improve their experience, skills and competencies.
- Learn about the range of opportunities available to gain work experience whilst they are a student at the University of Leeds, including where to look for them, and how and when to apply for them.
- Have developed a skills based CV and Covering Letter, targeted for a specific work experience opportunity.
- Have the opportunity to develop practical techniques to deliver confident presentations and be part of an effective team in delivering group work.
-Have an increased understanding of the range of ways in which the Careers Centre can help them in their career planning and development through all stages of their education degree programme.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this module students will :

- Have developed a clearer picture and understanding of their own skills, competencies, interests and personal characteristics in relation to work experience and career choices.
- Understand what they need to do to develop their work experience opportunities and employability and be aware of the resources, support and opportunities available to help with this.
- Understand how and what they need to do to compete effectively in the work experience and job market.
- Produced a targeted and skills based CV and letter.
- Have a clear understanding of what skills, competencies, qualities and experience are necessary for a specific occupation/sector and how their suitability meets this criteria.

20 hours - Work Experience research, vacancy searching and 'CV and Cover letter' writing/targeting
10 hours - Post- workshop completion of 'Learning Logs'
8 hours - 'Sources of Support' research and presentation preparation
35 hours - Research, analysis and report writing for 'Summative Statement'
5 hours - Action Planning

100 hours of occupational research developing research and written communication skills including identifying sources, attending careers events (where relevant), undertaking self analysis, networking, etc.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Attendance will be expected at every taught session.
Students will be monitored to ensure they successfully complete the module and are well prepared for their future career progress. This will be done by:

- VLE Discussion Boards to identify level of individual student engagement.
- Module Tutors will be available for individual consultations out of teaching time regarding ALL aspects of their progress.
- Verbal feedback will be offered to students about their CV and letter though a CV checking service currently offered daily by the Careers Centre.

For each piece of assessed work, students will have access to the marking criteria being used, which tutors will discuss when each piece of assessed work is introduced in the workshops. The criteria will demonstrate what they need to do to achieve a first class, upper second class, etc. mark on this module.
