Objectives

The module provides a unique opportunity for students to critically examine and describe their own foreign language learning experiences with reference to theoretical models of language learning.

It will enable students to apply knowledge developed in modules EDUC 1040, 1050, 2090, 2003 in the identification and examination of processes of teaching and learning foreign languages during study the co-requisite FLTU module.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
- describe and critique methods of collecting and analysing data for the purposes of studying language learning
- express critical understanding of their own foreign language learning experiences
- make generalisations from their own and documented experiences of foreign language learning with reference to theoretical models.

Skills outcomes
- Planning and organising data collection
- Keeping a reflective log of learning events
- Data analysis.


Syllabus

Sessions
1, 2, 3, 4, 5 will be taught in semester 1 as students start the co-requisite FLTU module.

Researching Language Learning
- Introduction to module
- Types of data
- Methods of collecting data
- Methods of analysing data for the study of language learning
- Documented studies of language learning in L1, and of bilingual children
- Documented studies of adult FL learning

6. Learner Style and Motivation: Using data to identify learner style and type of motivation for language learning.
7. Accuracy and Fluency: Using data to measure accuracy and fluency in language learning.
8. Language knowledge: Using data to describe knowledge of grammar, vocabulary and phonological knowledge and discourse skill.
9. Oral skills: Using the data to identify listening and speaking skill.
10. Written skills: Using the data to identify reading and writing skill.
11. Preparation of group poster presenting significant findings from students' research activity which may be generalisable.

Private study

- Students will be directed to specific readings and will be set tasks associated with the reading.
- Students will also engage in structured data collection activity.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students progress will be monitored through:
- Checking (during teaching sessions) on quality of students' preparation for the session
- Checking, assessing and giving feedback on students' progress with data collection and reflective logs
- Encouraging, and observing the level of, student participation in class discussions
- Monitoring the contributions of students to VLE discussion threads.
