Pre-requisite qualifications

Normally, at least two years relevant postgraduate professional experience. Ability to use basic digital technology (email, www, office software).

Module summary

This module introduces the theory and practice of technology enhanced language learning. Students learn about the theories underpinning technology enhanced learning and connect this to practice. The module includes opportunities to experience a variety of digital tools for language learning and teaching.Examinations for EDUC 5261M and EDUC 5262M can be taken either at Leeds or at a local British Council Office. Students who choose to sit the examinations at a British Council Office will need to pay an additional fee directly to the British Council.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should:
- have knowledge and capabilities which demonstrate a critical analysis and understanding of how digital technologies may be used to support language learning and teaching;
- understand the context in which the field technology enhanced language learning and teaching is located including alternative perspectives and practices and their implications;
- be able to develop and apply novel approaches in the design and evaluation of materials and assessments using digital technologies for language learning, teaching and assessment

Learning outcomes
Students will know about theoretical perspectives underpinning the use of technology for language learning and teaching. They will also gain knowledge of a range of digital tools that may be used to support language learning and teaching.

Skills outcomes
Using and facilitating digitally mediated communication
Using technology in the language classroom and to support learning outside the classroom.


Syllabus

This module examines a variety of types of software and technology that may be used for language teaching and learning and considers both practical and theoretical aspects. Participants will have the opportunity to gain practical experience through workshops, discussion and seminars.

- Approaches to writing with digital tools
- Finding authentic materials
- Blogs and blogging
- Digital games
- Making digital materials
- Making and using digital audio and video
- Concordancing
- Online and distance learning
- Designing and planning for technology enhanced language learning

Private study

Students will be provided each week with online ‘lectures’ in written and audio formats together with supplementary readings, material, tasks and activities. Students will also be expected to undertake directed reading of academic papers; to post reviews of these papers on an online discussion forum and to respond to reviews that other students have written.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Each participant will be expected to make a contribution of between 500-750 words per unit, about a specific topic, in the asynchronous discussion. Each person will be expected to contribute to (and occasionally facilitate) the weekly synchronous online seminar. Each student will have two individual tutorials to discuss progress. Students will also participate in weekly synchronous online discussions which will also enable tutors to monitor progress.
