Objectives

- To equip students with the necessary study and research skills to enable them to effectively engage with the study of English at university.
- To support research-led teaching and learning. From the outset, to develop students as active learners who can make full use of, and benefit from, the diverse resources of a modern research university.
- To allow students, by developing and harnessing the requisite skills to participate properly within the scholarly community.
- To foster an academic environment where students value and practise the fundamentals of scholarly process.
- To encourage students to make the link between the development of their research and study skills, and their own learning progression, thereby becoming proficient as researchers and active learners rather than passive recipients of 'how to' instructions.

Learning outcomes
- Students will acquire discipline-specific study and research skills in English Language, English Literature, and Theatre Studies.
- Students will learn academic writing and presentational skills, including the necessity for full and accurate referencing according to the School's guidelines.
- Students will be made aware of the definitions and penalties attached to cheating and plagiarism, and shown how to develop good academic practice.
- Students will receive guidance on tackling different assessment types. The importance of interpreting feedback, in all its guises (verbal, written, (in)formal, individual/group etc) will be emphasised so that students can take active responsibility for developing their own learning potential.

Skills outcomes
Module develops discipline-specific study and research skills in English Language, English Literature, and Theatre Studies.
